{HHRMA~Bali} Promote Your Abilities and Rephrase Your Liabilities

Just sharing from
http://hrdbali.blogspot.com/In an interview setting most people feel nervous and vulnerable. This can be even more so when dealing with a disability or some other problem areas. People who have a disability or injury and who are being interviewed for a job can be tempted to talk negatively about liabilities in a desire to be completely honest. However, while honesty is certainly necessary I would suggest that these issues can be addressed in a different way.
When discussing liabilities try to rephrase it in a more positive way. Compensate for the disability and avoid uncomplimentary labels. Don't belittle yourself or use 'put down' language. The interview setting is not the time to be modest but to tell the interviewer what you can do.
EXAMPLES OF REPHRASING:
Instead of:... Use:...
Fairly Experienced --> Experienced
Only Part-Time --> Part-Time
Considerably Experienced --> Experienced
Reasonably Good At... --> Capable Of
Some Experience --> I Have Experience
I Think or Believe I Can... --> I Can
MORE EXAMPLES:
"Mental patient" --> I sought help for emotional problems
"High school dropout" --> I decided to leave high school during my senior year.
Identify the positive result of that experience. For example:
"As a result of rehabilitation, I am committed to not using drugs. As a matter of fact, it has put me in a position to really focus on working and performing better than I ever have."
Describe other skills or assets, which counterbalance the deficit. For example:
"Although I learn more slowly than other people do, I don't get bored as easily with routine tasks. Once I've learned the task, I can do it as well or better than others."
Deny that the liability is critical
Provide other evidence, which refutes the importance of the deficit. For example:
"Although this is my first full-time experience as a dental assistance, in my practical experiences at school I was always able to learn new tasks very quickly."
COMPENSATE FOR DISABILITY
Instead of Lack of Experience
"Although this is my first experience as a dental assistant, in my practical experiences at school I was always able to learn new tasks quickly."
Instead of "I have a crook back"
"I have experienced some problems with my back, however it is now stable, and through a Rehabilitation Program I am aware of how to manage it"
Or
"Although I do have a back condition I have extensive knowledge of the transport industry and have worked in the area for many ears. I am fully aware of the day-to-day running operations of this type of business."
Instead of "I can't concentrate"
"I do experience some problems focusing on too many things at once, however I am able to use strategies to deal with this."
Or
"I have a muscular condition which can cause me to get pins and needles occasionally however..."
EXAMPLES OF DISCLOSURE WHEN APPLYING FOR A JOB
Q: "Do you have any health problems?"
Possible Answers, for an application form:
Not that would affect my ability to do the job I will discuss that at the interview I previously had... which I have now recovered from and I do not feel that this will affect my work performance.I have a medical illness but I feel I will still be able to do the job as required.
Leave it blank and explain verbally in a job interview if required Do not say 'no' if the answer is 'yes'
Possible Answers, for an application letter:
You may note periods of absence from the workforce. This has enable me to deal with a... I am now keen to further my skills and knowledge in this area and have demonstrated my reliability and readiness during a recent course at... Furthermore, I have... to offer the position.
Possible Answers, for an Interview Question:
Having experienced... I have a better understanding of people and greater insight into others and myself. This will be an advantage in the job. I've had... Do you know much about...? What it means for me is... I've now moved through that and am keen to participate in the workforce. Due to a... I've had the opportunity to explore many aspects of life. I am looking forward to applying my knowledge and skills to this position.
I hope that these examples show you ways in which you feel more confident about your abilities and that it will give you the motivation and attitude to become a successful candidate.
Abraham Lincoln said: "You can have anything you want -- if you want it badly enough. You can be anything you want to be, do anything you set out to accomplish, if you hold to that desire with singleness of purpose."
